How to have my own website

I often get asked “How do I go about having my own website”? It is seriously much more simple than most people think. There are basically three things that are needed to own your own website.

  • Domain name: This is the “address” of your website. As example this site’s domain name is
  • Hosting: A website is hosted on a server with a hosting provider. This is where your website is uploaded to to enable it to be visible on the net.
  • Website development: You will need to build or develop your site. There are a few site builders but I prefer using WordPress which is the easiest at the moment.

With the way that the coronaviruses has changed the way business’s are operating, it is the right time to have your own small business or personal website.

There are Web Development Companies that build the complicated and beautifully designed websites for larger companies and corporations but these come at price.

My aim is to help the persons with startup companies, small companies or anyone that wants a website to get going as cheaply as possible.

Domain Name Registration

Your domain name needs to be registered and will belong to you until you cancel it for what ever reason. There is an initial cost to register the domain and it needs to be renewed every year. I can register your domains at the following costs.

These are the current costs which may change as inflation hits.

  • Domain ending in – R79 initially and R79 every year after
  • Domain ending in .com – R169 initially and R169 every year after
  • Domain ending in .africa – R389 initially and R389 every year after

The above are the most popular domain names but there are quite a few others available.

A point to remember is that with all the hundreds of thousand domain names out there it is a good idea to have a couple of options that you would like. We can then check which is available.

Hosting Services

Hosting costs vary according to the size of the site and from hosting company to hosting company.

After I have registered your domain, I can offer you hosting at R75 per month or R825 paid once off for the year.

This will include the hosting setup, loading WordPress on your domain and you will have 100 email boxes at your disposal. This means you can create 100 different emails for your domain name. Example – (My email address).

You can log into your C-Panel to create your emails or I can do it for you at no extra charge.

Website development

When you have registered your domain and your monthly hosting is setup – its time to get your site up and running. Like mentioned previously, I will load WordPress on your site.

Basically WordPress is a ready made site and all you need to do is write your content and upload your pictures or graphics etc.

My website that you are currently viewing is made using WordPress with the Twenty-Sixteen Theme. There are many Theme’s to choose from, Free and Paid. I normally just opt for the free themes.

There are many tutorials and Youtube videos available explaining how to use WordPress with all the tips and tricks.

The online store for Rockio Clothing was built using WordPress with the Twenty -Twenty Theme and the free Woocommerce Plugin component that turns the site into an Online Store.

Our business website was also built using WordPress with the Twenty-Twenty Theme. The possibilities are endless and experimenting with the options can be quite fun.

What is WordPress

WordPress is an open-source software that is free for anyone to use. It is popular as no coding or technical experience is needed to create a website. You can modify it to suite your needs without permission.

WordPress doesn’t require a computer engineering degree. It’s actually built for non-technical people. The user interface is intuitive and friendly. To add a new design to your website, you can simply download a theme. If you need to add a new function, like a contact form, you just install a plugin. Web development tasks that used to take hours to complete can be done in a matter of minutes.

Many years ago, WordPress was primarily a tool to create a blog, rather than more traditional websites. That hasn’t been true for a long time, though. Nowadays, thanks to changes to the core code, as well as WordPress’ massive ecosystem of plugins and themes, you can create any type of website with WordPress.

You can create:

  • Blogs
  • Personal Websites
  • Business Website
  • Online Stores
  • Social Websites
  • Membership Websites
  • The possibilities are endless!
